VW Plots New Premium Midsize Sedan

Volkswagen is in the early stages of developing a sedan that will bridge the gap between the Passat and Phaeton.

According to a report by AutoBild, VW hasn’t settled on a platform to underpin the model yet, but is considering either its MQB architecture or the MLB platform Audi uses for several vehicles including the A6. In either case, the car is supposedly being designed with an interior and trunk to fit American and Chinese automotive tastes with a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines borrowed

A wagon model is supposedly part of the plan, but not for the North American market.

If VW chooses to underpin the new sedan with the MLB platform, it risks stealing sales from the A6. AutoBild’s report also suggests that the new odel isn’t expected until the end of the decade.

This seems counter productive- there is not much price difference between similarly equipped VW and Audi. I am always a fan of creating better , more efficient motors.

Apparently VW is trying to slice and dice the market into microscopic slivers like BMW. Guys, you probably DON'T need another sedan model. Sometimes discretion is a good thing.
