BMW is working towards adding a new Gran Coupe model to its lineup.

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will follow in the footsteps of its larger cousins like the 4 Series Gran Coupe (seen above), offering a four-door version of a two-door car. According to Auto Motor Und Sport, Klaus Fröhlich, BMW’s head of research and development wants a rear-wheel drive four-dour coupe to join the lineup.

BMW wants to play in the same space as the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3, both of which offer four doors and have seen greater sales success than BMW’s small car. If the pricing structure follows in the footsteps of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the new four-door 2 Series will become the cheapest version of the car.

If the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes to fruition, expect it to arrive around 2018.
