Four New Models Join IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Group
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded its top safety accolade to four new models.
The 2016 Honda Civic four door, Hyundai Sonata, Lexus RX and Nissan Altima all made the grade, which means that each of the cars earned a good rating in five different crash tests and has an available front crash prevention system.

In order to scoop up the ‘Plus’ moniker, each of the cars must get better than a basic rating for front crash prevention. In the case of these four, all of them scored a superior rating, though the Nissan Altima couldn’t quite avoid a collision while traveling at 25 mph, but the speed was cut enough to earn a top rating.
Both the Sonata and Altima improved from ‘acceptable’ to ‘good’ ratings in the small overlap crash test thanks to improved safety structures this year. The improvements made to the Sonata actually came after 2016 production began, so the award only applies to Sonatas built after October of 2015.
