Toyota is teasing the FT-4X Concept, which will make its official debut on Wednesday, April 12 during the New York Auto Show.

Though very few details are offered, the teaser includes the phrase “four wheeling, scene stealing,” suggesting that the concept will be off-road ready. In the past, Toyota has used the FT moniker on a number of concepts as it stands for “Future Toyota.” The FT-86 came before the Toyota 86 while the FT-1 Concept is the precursor to the new Supra.

The FT-4X is likely giving us a preview of a new Toyota FJ Cruiser, an off-road ready SUV that was discontinued in 2014.

If a new FJ Cruiser comes to fruition it is setting up a great new off-road SUV segment that will be made up of the new Ford Bronco and redesigned Jeep Wrangler.

Come back to AutoGuide on Wednesday, April 12 for live coverage from the New York Auto Show.

The big complaint that I always read about the FJ was that it had poor visibility. For the life of me, I could never understand why Toyota would not just correct that one thing. I have read that the Jeep Wrangler will finally be getting a diesel engine option. I think that will be a huge success. Chevy/GMC have their mid-sized pickups with diesel. Nissan is supposedly going to be offering a diesel engine in their next Frontier. Ford is adding a diesel to their F-150. I hope that all of this will force Toyota to begin offering a diesel engine in some of their products. A diesel FJ, which does exist in other countries, would be, in my opinion, a great success. So would a diesel Tacoma and 4-Runner.

The FJ's "poor visibility" is/was easily fixed with a $10 set of convex stick-on mirrors. The FJ was styled after it's ancestors. Fix the "issue" and they would have ruined the historical styling.
