Volvo is placing electrification at the core of its future business model, announcing today that every new car it releases from 2019 onward will be electric or hybrid.

The Swedish automaker says it will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, including pure EVs, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrids. Five fully electric vehicles will arrive between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models. The remaining two will be badged Polestar — Volvo’s performance division that was recently rebranded as a dedicated electric performance car company.

The five full electric models will be supplemented by a range of gasoline and diesel plug-in hybrids. Volvo will also offer a 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain on all of its models to complete “one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker.”

Volvo is looking to minimize its environmental impact and ensure cleaner cities of the future with this new business model. It says it is “focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations,” and is aiming to have climate-neutral manufacturing operations by 2025.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”

Volvo currently only sells one plug-in hybrid model, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, which utilizes a 316 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 87 horsepower electric motor and a 9.2 kWh battery pack. It will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of its XC40 compact crossover next year, which is expected to arrive with a 55 kWh battery pack and an all-electric driving range of around 31 miles.
