With their boxy shape and bug-eyed looks, it’s truly hard not to love Japan’s little modern-day kei cars.

Honda has released a teaser image this week for a new concept kei car its working on – the N Van. It will join the existing vehicles in Honda’s ‘N’ range of kei cars, which include the N One, N WGN, N Box and the funny looking N Box Slash X. But whereas those vehicles are suited for transporting people, the N Van will be a cargo van for hauling whatever Japan’s working class can throw at it.

The entire point of a kei car is for it meet certain tax and insurance regulations that make it cheap to own and operate. Those regulations stipulate that the car’s engine must not displace more than 660cc and output may not exceed 63 hp. As such, the N Van will probably feature Honda’s DOHC three-cylinder engine found in the rest of its N range of kei class vehicles. A CVT transmission will probably also be offered, which is what’s used in the N One.

The N Van will also come with the Honda Sensing suite of active safety technology, the automaker says.

The Honda N Van is set to debut sometime this summer. Like other cars from the Honda N range, it won’t be sold outside of Japan, but maybe kei car fans can import one in the distant future.
