The next-generation BMW X5 will offer an off-road package and will come with rear-wheel steering, the German automaker has revealed.

BMW shared new details on the 2019 X5 and its vigorous off- and on-road testing program today. The automaker has put the SUV through hell during its development, testing it in the scorching heat of America’s deserts and the frigid temperatures of Sweden’s Lapland. It’s also conducted testing at the demanding and daunting Nurburgring circuit in Germany and the gravel-covered trails of South Africa.

The automaker says the SUV will be offered with a new off-road package that “offers an impressive combination of highest-level ride comfort on the road and the possibility of changing the vehicle setup at the press of a button to suit the conditions of driving off the beaten track perfectly.”

“Be it snow, sand, rocks or gravel roads – the new BMW X5 has the perfect powertrain and suspension setup for each surface,’ the automaker added.

Additionally, the SUV will be offered with BMW’s Integral Active Steering system, which seamlessly adjusts the steering feel and weight depending on the driving situation at hand. The system also includes rear-wheel steering, which will give the SUV more stability at road speeds and more maneuverability in parking lots, and Adaptive M Suspension Professional active roll bars.

The 2019 BMW X5 is expected to debut sometime later this year. Stay tuned for more details on the luxury SUV as they become available.

I like the fact that the bottom line says "No one is actually going to off-road this." On point !
