The BMW XM Has Entered Series Production At Spartanburg South Carolina Plant

The BMW XM PHEV finally entered into series production this month.

BMW’s controversially styled XM flagship SUV may not be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s finally entered production. For those unaware, the XM is the biggest, fastest BMW SUV one can buy, sitting above the X7 in size and price. Power comes from a big V8 with a powerful electric motor, which combined, produce a whopping 644 horsepower and 590 ft/lbs of torque. The electric motor is fed by a 25.7 kWh battery, good for 30 miles of all-electric range, and a 0-60 time in the low 4-second range. It’s not cheap, either – pricing starts at a pretty spendy $159,000, not including the destination fee.

“The BMW XM is the first ever high-performance car with an electrified drive system from BMW M,” according to the BMW press release. BMW also says the XM is the first bespoke, standalone “M” model from the brand since the iconic M1.

Like other BMW crossover SUVs, it is made at the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. “As the center of competence for X models, BMW Plant Spartanburg is prepared to build this vehicle with the highest premium quality that our customers deserve,” said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing. Currently, the Spartanburg, SC plant produces the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and all of their respective M versions. The BMW XM will officially go on sale in spring 2023, and be exported from South Carolina, to places all around the world. BMW says North America, China, and the Middle East are the XM’s key sales markets.
