Haul more and drive safer with these affordable accessories

Honda’s fortunes and reputation in the North American market is built on the venerable Accord, so we thought it wise to share some of the best Honda Accord accessories for the army of owners out there.

When it was launched in three-door hatchback form in 1976, Detroit already had reason to worry about the Japanese competing on price, but the Accord’s mission was to convince the American market that Japan could compete on quality too. And it has delivered the goods – in its second generation, the Accord sedan landed on Car and Driver’s 1983 10-best list, and in the 38 years since, has failed to appear just twice.

The success of the Accord led to spinoffs and subplots as complex as a Marvel hero’s Wikipedia page. The first Accord was a three-door, 68 HP hatchback. The four-door sedan became the archetype of the model, but there were two-door coupes, wagons, and the oddly-proportioned Accord Crosstour. For enthusiasts, there were plenty of sleeper Accords. Balanced chassis dynamics, V-Tec engines, and silky-smooth manual transmissions combined to make Accords much more engaging than their outward appearance would suggest. V6 models of the past few years and the 2021 2.0T pull 0-60 in under 6 seconds.

And despite the explosion of the SUV market, Honda still put nearly 200,000 new Accords onto American roads in 2020. With that kind of volume and variety, the selection of aftermarket Honda Accord accessories is as diverse as the model itself.

1. AST Smart ECO VCM Controller

Some Honda V6 engines feature cylinder deactivation for slightly better fuel economy, shutting down three cylinders when they are not needed for power output. However, many owners blame the resulting vibration for a litany of problems, including destroyed engine mounts, worn piston rings, fouled injectors, and excessive oil consumption. They were vindicated in a 2013 class action suit, after which Honda extended their warranties but did not alter the engines.

Fortunately, there is a way change the engines yourself, with a variable cylinder management controller. One of the smartest Honda Accord accessories we can think of, the unit plugs into to the engine coolant temperature sensor, and forces the engine to run on all six cylinders. Installation is easy, reversible, and takes about 15 minutes.

Pros

Most owners report less vibration, quicker throttle response, and a little peace of mind

Cons

You may see a slight increase in fuel consumption, typically around 1 – 2 MPG depending on your driving habits

Promoted Product: Gold Shield 5L Honda Accord Car Covers at CarCover.com

The Honda Accord is one of the best selling sedans on the road, and one that inspires a lot of loyalty from its owners. These cars are known for low maintenance costs and longevity, which can be bolstered by using a Gold Shield 5L Honda Accord Car Cover from CarCover.com. The Gold Shield is a five-layer car cover, cut to specifically fit the shape of a mid-sized sedan, like the Accord. The cover has strap and buckle cinches at each end and an elastic band for a snug fit around the bottom of the car. These covers are 100% waterproof and are weather and UV-resistant. This cover comes with a limited lifetime warranty and is constructed of three layers of polypropylene, a single layer of microporous film, and an additional layer of soft fleece lining to protect your car’s finish. The cover comes with a case, too, making it easily portable. Whether you park your Honda Accord in the garage, on the driveway or on the street, the Gold Shield 5L offers protection from just about anything Mother Nature can throw at it.

2. 3D MAXpider All-Weather Floor Mats

If there’s one box to leave unchecked at the Honda dealer, it’s OEM all-weather floor mats. Honda’s version cuts around the dead pedal under the driver’s left foot, allowing water and gravel to drip ahead of the leading edge and saturate the carpet underneath. MAXpider laser-scans the floor of the Accord to make a shaped floor mat that provides edge-to-edge coverage in front of all five seats. Grommets fit over the Accord’s original pegs, for proper positioning and secure installation. Considering that good quality floor mats can save you some serious interior damage, these are among the first Honda Accord accessories we would recommend to new owners.

Pros

Three colors available to match interior colors

Cons

The price is about triple what an aftermarket flat mat set costs, though about the same as the Honda’s OEM mats

3. K&N Cold Air Intake Kit

A cold air intake allows slightly more oxygen by volume into the combustion chamber, by allowing the air to enter at a lower temperature and hence a smaller volume. K&N claims a dyno-tested increase of just over 5 HP on a 2.4L Accord. It also replaces the disposable paper air filter with a cleanable, re-usable one.

There is a long debate over whether the performance increase is worth the money, or even there at all. But there is no debate that it looks cool.

Pros

Makes your engine louder

Cons

Makes your engine louder

4. Mustbee Manganese Steel Tire Chains

The Honda Accord has slipped to 3rd on Honda’s sales sheets. The Civic always was ahead of it, but the CR-V has overtaken them both. In the North American market, people like four-wheel drive, equipping for off-road adventures both real and imagined. But in truth, most CR-Vs will never go anywhere the Accord’s front-wheel-drive can’t get to, especially with a set of these steel tire chains in the trunk for the worst winter weather.

One kit includes six chains, which is only enough to cover the Accord’s front wheels in an emergency – a second kit to cover the rear wheels will leave your Accord cruising past many an SUV in the ditch in a bad snowstorm. For you northern drivers, this is one of the best Honda Accord accessories to invest in.

Pros

Includes a snow shovel and gloves for roadside installation, four-chain clamp arrangement packs away smaller and lighter than traditional tire chain sets

Cons

Limited to 25 mph

5. CarQiWireless Wireless Charger

Honda began adding wireless charging to the Accord in the late 2010s, but if you didn’t check that box on the options list, CarQiWireless has you covered. This unit fits into the center console in the storage bin beneath the climate controls, replacing the rubber mat that came from the factory. It plugs into the 12V outlet, so it isn’t taking up a USB port, but it is adding a USB port at the leading edge, along with a power and status light to let you know what the charger is doing.

Pros

Very short power cord from 12V outlet to the mat is directed to run along the side of the compartment, making the unit nearly indistinguishable from a factory option

Cons

You may need to remove your phone cover for it to work, and you’ll still need to plug in to the main USB port to use CarPlay

6. LT Sport Universal Moonroof Visor

A sunroof is a nice idea in theory, but wind buffeting and noise means that in practice, they don’t get used much. A deflector smooths out airflow over the opening, making the sunroof practical even at highway speed or even in a light rain. Though an OEM visor will usually have a mechanical connection, the LT mounts via 3M VHB tape, the same double-sided adhesive holding your badges to your fenders – if either blows off in the wind, you’re definitely driving too fast.

Pros

Simple installation, some additional UV protection for occupants

Cons

Intrudes about two inches into open space, can increase wind noise if your car is also equipped with a roof rack

7. HandiRack Universal Inflatable Roof Rack

Unless you’ve held onto one of the station wagons discontinued in 1997, there’s no way you’re getting your surfboard into your Accord. This is where the HandiRack comes in, adding 400D nylon inflatable roof pads with a 175-pound carrying capacity to the roof of your car. The rack comes with bow and stern lines for canoes or other long loads, a hand pump for inflation, and straps for securing your load to the built-in D-rings. For owners that like need some extra cargo space, this is one of our favorite Honda Accord accessories.

Pros

Quick installation via a pass-through strap running through the interior, when not in use, the racks pack down into a storage bag small enough to store in a corner of the trunk

Cons

If your Accord is equipped with side curtain airbags, the HandiRack may interfere with them in an accident

Which Accords were subject to the class action suit for VCM-related problems?

All Accords with the 3.5L V6 are equipped with VCM. Honda extended the powertrain warranty on those models to 8 years.

When did Honda begin adding side curtain airbags to the Accord?

The first Accord models with side curtain airbags were sold in 2003.

Which Accord is the fastest?

Though it can’t be had with the dearly-missed manual transmission of older Accords, the 2021 Accord Sport 2.0T has a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds, just a tenth of a second behind the Civic Type R.
