All new vehicles come with a factory warranty that promises to cover mechanical repairs if you break down within the first few years of your ownership, but these warranty terms differ widely between manufacturers. If you are purchasing a Ram truck, you may be wondering: What does the Ram warranty cover, and for how long?

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Ram warranty coverage and discuss whether it’s worth investing in added coverage from one of the best extended warranty companies on the market. If you think an extended warranty would be a good choice to protect your truck long-term, you can use the buttons above to start getting quotes from our top recommended providers.

What Does a Ram Warranty Cover?

A Ram warranty covers your vehicle after mechanical breakdowns for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Your Ram’s powertrain warranty lasts 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Every new Ram vehicle is covered by Mopar® vehicle protection. Mopar is the parts manufacturer of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which includes the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat brands. Here are the four Mopar plans that cover new Ram trucks:

Ram Warranty Term Length Coverage Details
Limited Warranty
3 years/36,000 miles Provides bumper-to-bumper coverage that includes most major vehicle components
Limited Warranty
5 years/60,000 miles for gas trucks and
5 years/100,000 miles for diesel trucks
Covers the engine, transmission, transaxle, transfer case, vehicle drive system, and internally lubricated parts
Anti-Corrosion Perforation Limited Warranty 3 years/unlimited miles for inner panels and
5 years/unlimited miles for outer panels
Protects your inner and outer sheet metal panels from rust and corrosion
Federal Emissions Warranty 2 years/24,000 miles, or
8 years/80,000 miles for specific components
Guarantees that your vehicle meets emissions regulations set by the EPA

These coverage lengths are short compared to the best new car warranties, but you can always lengthen your vehicle protection by purchasing a Ram extended warranty through Mopar or from a third-party provider.

Like any service contract, the Ram warranty does not cover all repairs. Here is a list of Ram warranty exclusions:

  • Tire damage
  • Damage resulting from normal wear and tear
  • Modifications
  • Damage from racing or collisions
  • Environmental or weather-related damage
  • Regular maintenance

Certified Pre-Owned Ram Warranty

If you buy a certified pre-owned (CPO) Ram, your Ram warranty coverage will look a bit different. Ram’s CPO warranty extends the factory Powertrain Limited Warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles. The Ram CPO bumper-to-bumper warranty only extends the Basic Limited Warranty coverage an extra 3 months/3,000 miles.

All Ram warranty plans, including CPO warranties, are fully transferable—which could increase the resale value of your Ram if you choose to sell before your warranty expires.

Is a Ram Extended Warranty Worth It?

In order to decide if a Ram extended warranty is right for you, you’ll want to honestly assess your finances and your vehicle’s reliability. If you could easily afford to pay for sudden, unexpected repairs out of pocket, you may not need an extended warranty.

Ram vehicles earned a 3.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating from RepairPal, ranking the manufacturer 23rd out of 32 car brands.

This rating is based on three factors: annual cost of repairs, frequency of trips to the repair shop per year, and how likely it is that a repair will be severe. RepairPal describes a “severe” repair as costing at least three times the industry average annual repair cost, or $1,968. Here is how Ram scored in these categories:

Repair Rating Category Ram Average Industry Average
Annual Repair Cost $858 $656
Frequency of Repair Shop Visits 0.26 0.3
Likelihood of Severe Repairs 15% 12%

As you can see, Rams cost significantly more per year to maintain than other cars. However, these vehicles require slightly fewer trips to the repair shop per year. Finally, the likelihood that repairs will be severe is also significantly higher than other car brands, which may account for the heightened annual cost of repairs.

So what does this mean for your Ram warranty coverage?

Although Ram trucks tend to require fewer trips to the repair shop than the average vehicle, repair costs and severity are higher than average. This means that without a Ram extended warranty, you will be expected to pay the full price of these severe repairs out of pocket. A Ram extended warranty could help make this cost more affordable and bring you peace of mind knowing that many of your Ram’s major repairs will be covered.

Ram Extended Warranty vs. Third-Party Providers

If you’re interested in a Ram extended warranty, you have two options: You can purchase a Mopar vehicle protection plan or a plan from a third-party warranty company. Below, we weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option to help you decide which protection would be a better fit for you.

Here are some pros and cons of a Ram extended warranty from Mopar:

Pros of Mopar Ram Extended Warranty Cons of Mopar Ram Extended Warranty
Repairs are guaranteed to be made by Ram-trained technicians using genuine Ram parts. Repairs can only be completed at the dealership.
Plans are specifically designed
with Ram trucks’ needs in mind.
Ram warranty plans are more expensive,
and your price may be less negotiable.

Here are some pros and cons of a third-party Ram extended warranty:

Pros of Third-Party Extended Warranty Cons of Third-Party Extended Warranty
Covered repairs can be completed at any licensed repair shop or dealership. Plans are designed for the masses, meaning they will likely not be tailored to your truck’s unique needs.
Coverage limits are longer. There are many fly-by-night companies in the extended warranty industry, so you’ll need to research reputable extended car warranty companies.
Plans are typically more affordable
and are often negotiable.

When it comes down to deciding where to buy your extended warranty coverage, we recommend motorists take the following steps:

  1. Assess what coverage you currently have (if any), and determine how useful that coverage has been for you so far. If you’ve benefited from your factory Ram warranty, chances are, you’ll benefit from an extended warranty, as trucks tend to break down and require expensive repairs more often as they age.
  2. Read reviews of providers to get a better understanding of coverage. We’ve reviewed both the Ram extended warranty and the best extended auto warranty providers in the industry to make the research process easier on you.
  3. Compare quotes from multiple providers to see which would provide the best coverage for the right price. We recommend starting with our highest-rated providers: Endurance, CARCHEX, and Protect My Car. You can get a free, personalized quote from each company below.
