Porsche GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 to Compete at Nurburgring 24 With More Efficient Engine
While Audi made a name for diesels in endurance racing, Porsche is paving the way for hybrids, announcing that it will once again run its GT3 R Hybrid at the Nurburgring 24 Hour Race this June.
The updated car creates the same power as last year’s model, but is more efficient, meaning it will require fewer stops for gas during the endurance classic. Porsche has done this through dropping weight used in the car, reducing the weight of the hybrid components by 20 percent. The goal, says Porsche in a press release, is to maintain the lap times of last year’s car, but with less fuel consumption, which not only makes for a better enduro racer, but also supports “future developments of road-going, sporting hybrid vehicles” says Hartmut Kristen, head of Porsche motorsport.
Using the same hybrid powertrain the GT3 R 2.0 makes 470-hp from a naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine, with an additional 200-hp of electric boost available on demand.
Porsche has not said if they will be competing for victory at the race, or if, like last year, the car will be in a non-competitive class.
