Goodyear is now accepting nominations for its 30th Highway Hero Award, which will be given out at the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show.

Every year, the tire manufacturer Goodyear looks for a professional truck driver who has performed a notable heroic deed while on the road. The award honors truck drivers who put themselves in harm’s way to help other people. A $5,000 cash award will be given to the winner along with a custom Goodyear Highway Hero ring and other prizes. The person who nominates the winner will receive a $1,000 finder’s fee.

To give you an idea of just how heroic some truck drivers are out on the road, last year’s winner, Mike Schiotis, rescued a woman from a gun-wielding attacker. Other past winners have pulled an elderly man from a car before it was destroyed by an oncoming train, a driver who rescued two girls trapped in a burning car, and a driver who jumped into a pond to save a child in a sinking car.

“The Goodyear Highway Hero Award is the first – and most prestigious – award of its kind,” said Phillip Kane, vice president of Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. “The 30th anniversary of the award will be extra special, and we look forward to crowning an equally special winner.”
