Volkswagen will be heading to next year’s Detroit Auto Show with a seven-seater SUV concept based on its Passat model, that will be manufactured in the U.S.

The three-row SUV will make its debut in concept form in Detroit, slotting in between the Tiguan and Touareg models in the German automaker’s existing SUV lineup. It will be developed on VW’s MQB platform, which also underpins the new Golf and is an evolution of the Tiguan’s current platform. Although there’s a big price gap between the Tiguan and Touareg models, the new seven-seater will have to be priced on the lower end of the spectrum to reasonably compete with the Honda Pilot and Ford Edge.

The seven-seater SUV is all part of the automaker’s plan to produce more models in the crossover and SUV segment, joining the Taigun that was unveiled earlier this week.
