The 2012 L.A. Auto Show is in full swing, and hanging out at the Mazda booth is the new 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D diesel engine with a plaque beside it that confirms that it will arrive in the 2014 Mazda6.

The Mazda6 diesel is expected to be on the market by late 2013, and make somewhere around 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Exact fuel economy numbers have yet to be announced, but the automaker predictably says that they will be excellent.

To help the already good fuel economy of the diesel, Mazda will also include a capacitor-based brake regeneration system to put power back into the car while taxing the engine less to generate that electricity than a conventional system would.
