Maserati is currently working towards having a 100-percent coverage of the luxury sports car market, which means a Porsche 911 rival is in the works.

A mid-engined rival to the Porsche 911 from Maserati is set to launch by 2015 and will be built on a chassis based on the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C. The vehicle hasn’t been confirmed by Maserati officials, but it’s an essential model to the automaker’s lineup if it wants to take on the entire sports car market.

In a recent interview with Autocar, Maserati head Harald Wester hinted at the 911 rival by stating that “by 2015 we [Maserati] will have 100 percent representation” in the luxury sports car market. Currently, Maserati is represented in just 21 percent of the market.

Speculation around the mid-engined sports car has it being offered with both V6 and V8 powerplants, and it could be simply named “GranSport.” Both powerplants will feature twin-turbo power with around 450 to 550 hp depending on the engine. Maserati is hoping to have the weight of its sports car to be under 3,100 lbs.
