BMW Concept X4 Unveiled Before Shanghai Motor Show
BMW just officially released images and information on the concept car preview of what will be a more affordable version of the X6.
The Concept X4 won’t make its in-person debut until later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show, but leaked images and now official information are showing the car before that event.
Both this and the X6 look very similar and share their raked roofline and off-road coupe styling. The high beltline and structured styling, BMW says, will be a preview for more than the production X4, but the entire X family of vehicles.
The X4 will be 8.9 inches shorter, 2.8 inches lower and actually 2.8 inches wider than the X6 and will ride on the same platform as the X3. It also wears 21-inch alloy wheels.
The car will be built in BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility and is expected to reach the market as soon as 2014. Despite that, new information on the powertrain is still unavailable because this is a styling model and doesn’t have a drivetrain.
When it does reach production, the X4 will be sold with a range of four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system.
Rumors suggest the engine lineup will follow the X3, although the brand hasn’t made an official announcement yet. Likely engines for the U.S .market will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline unit along with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder gas powerplant. There will also likely be a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel available.
