The very first Chrysler 200 rolled off the line today at the brand’s assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

An additional 800 jobs have been added at the plant to support production of the new 200, while nearly $1 billion has been put into the plant since 2010 to revamp it. Before the investment was made, Chrysler had plans to close the Sterling Heights plant.

The new 200 rides on Alfa Romeo’s Compact Wide platform – the same as the Jeep Cherokee and Dodge Dart – and has a slightly shorter wheelbase at 108 inches than the generation it replaces. Standard fare when it comes to engines will be a 2.4-liter TigerShark four-cylinder engine providing 184 hp and mated to a nine-speed transmission. A 3.6-liter V6 with 295 hp is also available.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is expected to hit dealerships this spring.
