The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting an investigation on the 2005 Dodge Ram.

An estimated 260,000 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups from the 2005 model year are under investigation after consumer complaints of rear differential failures were reported to the agency. According to NHTSA, a total of 15 complaints have been received claiming that the rear differential locked up or the driveshaft separated at the rear connection to the differential in the affected trucks.

Of the complaints received, seven incidents occurred at speeds of 50 mph or greater and two allege that the rear axle lockup caused the truck to go into a spin. No reports of crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the investigation have been reported and the Chrysler Group is cooperating fully with NHTSA on the investigation.
