The more off-road capable Mercedes G500 4×4 Squared could be heading to the U.S.

Having gone on sale in parts of Europe last year, the hardcore G500 4×4 Squared starts with a standard G550 SUV but features larger 22-inch wheels paired to 325/55/22 tires along with a massive lift to accommodate the larger wheels and tires. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 422 horsepower sent to all four wheels. To further enhance ground clearance, the luxury SUV also has portal axles.

Speaking to Motor1, Mercedes’ general manager of product planning in the U.S., Bart Herring, said that the automaker is “very close to a good decision” on whether the G500 4×4 Squared will be sold in the U.S. Last year, sales of the G-Class in the U.S. totaled 3,616 units, compared to 2014’s figure of 3,090. In fact, sales of the SUV has increased steadily since 2009 and through three months of 2016, the German automaker has moved 973 units.

It’s unclear what pricing would be for the Mercedes G500 4×4 Squared if it does go on sale in the U.S., but in Germany where it is available, it is priced from €226,100, which is about $255,000 based on today’s conversion rates.
