An Italian ex-senator who is also a lover of classic cars has discovered that the 1958 Triumph TR3 he recently purchased is the same car used in the classic Italian film La Dolce Vita.

Filippo Berselli paid 30,000 euros ($34,000 US) for what he believed was simply an old Triumph TR3 from the late 50s when he first saw the car in Pesaro, Italy. After purchasing the vehicle, he discovered that it had been owned by a production house, Riama Film, run by Angelo Rizzoli, one of the producers of the film.

Doing some more digging, Berselli found that the original 1958 license plate number for the car was Roma 324229, registered on the 15th of July, 1958, which, indeed, made it the car driven by iconic Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni in the storied film.

“The car is in horrible condition and needs a complete restoration,” says Berselli.

La Dolce Vita was directed by Federico Fellini and won the Palm D’Or at Cannes in 1960.
