Pirelli is developing a unique set of tires for the Infiniti Q50 Project Black S.

The two companies announced the collaboration at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Pirelli saying it was attracted to the Project Black S “as a true track-to-road technology transfer project.” Pirelli will develop dedicated tires for the car, aimed at delivering outstanding performance paired with extreme aerodynamics.

Unfortunately, the announcement doesn’t confirm the Infiniti Q50 Project Black S is heading to production. AutoGuide.com reached out to Infiniti for a comment, with spokesperson Kyle Bazemore saying, “Project Black S is an exploration of a new Infiniti high-performance model line, and isn’t confirmed for production. Pirelli will now contribute to our exploration in terms of tire design and construction, and their input based upon their motorsport and production car expertise, will be invaluable.”

This is the second performance concept we’ve seen from Infiniti following the Q50 Eau Rouge, so there is obviously interest in entering the high-performance market. For now, though, this is still just “exploration” according to the brand.

“We are very excited about our ‘Project Black S’ and the work we are doing with Renault Sport Formula One Team on performance hybrid technology,” said Tommaso Volpe, Director of Infiniti Global Motorsport. “Having another key Formula One player involved is proof of the interest it generates and will add even more focus on performance delivery. As we explore the feasibility of ‘Project Black S,’ Pirelli’s input and knowledge – both motorsport and automotive – will be invaluable. We couldn’t be happier to have them onboard.”
