BMW is working on a more powerful, capable, and lighter X5 M.

Spy photographers recently caught the high-performance crossover testing in Sweden, as the German automaker readies the fourth-generation model. The 2019 BMW X5 is rumored to make its debut this summer, so expect the X5 M not to be far behind with a debut before the end of the year. Under the hood should be the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in the 2018 BMW M5, generating around 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is a given for the high-performance crossover, although it’s unclear if BMW will give it the ability to be completely rear-wheel drive like the M5.

The 2019 BMW X5 will also see a major change by switching to the CLAR platform, which currently underpins the 5 and 7 Series models.

Compared to the last time we saw the next-generation X5 testing, prototypes have dropped a bit of camouflage. Sporting blue brake calipers and large cross-drilled rotors, the X5 M also features its a familiar quad exhaust setup in the rear. Up front are large kidney grilles and what appears to be an aggressively styled front fascia.

We should hear and learn more about the 2019 BMW X5 later this year, so keep your eyes open for news.
