The 2012 Nissan GT Academy has come to an end, and unemployed mechanic Steve Doherty has earned himself a spot on a Nissan racing team as a driver, beating out 15 of the best Gran Turismo players in the country.

Last year, Doherty made it to the finals but missed the top 16 by a mere 0.6 seconds. Taking the experience he learned from the previous GT Academy, Doherty made a triumphant return in 2012 to clinch the win after battling it out on the track in Nissan 370Zs.

Doherty will make his professional race debut on January 10th at the 24 Hours of Dubai in the GT Academy Nissan 370Z.

“After being so close, I knew I could never let a chance like that slip through my fingers again,” said Doherty. “That’s where my history in sports helped me. The only person who can motivate you is yourself. I knew I would never get another chance like this, so I tried to make the best of every day. All of the hard work and commitment has paid off in the biggest way possible, but there’s much more work ahead.”
