2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Gets Rear-Wheel Steering, Automatic Only
Photos of the Porsche 911 GT3 were revealed earlier today, and now details have come out regarding the German brand’s iconic sports car including the addition of rear-wheel steering, and the axing of the manual transmission.
Along with the news of all four wheels turning comes word that the 911 GT3 will only be offered with the brand’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Power will come from a new 3.8-liter flat six that now uses direct injection to produce 475 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The engine will have a red line of 9000 RPM, and propel the car to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds, topping out at 196 mph. Only two selectable drive modes are available, “sport” and “racetrack.”

The rear-wheels on the 911 GT3 will turn up to 1.5 degrees, and will rotate the same direction as the front wheels when the car is at high speeds, and the opposite direction when the car is at low speeds. Steering comes via a new electric steering setup, rather than a hydraulic system. The wheels have also increased slightly in size, going from 19 to 20 inches.
The GT3 hit the treadmill as well, losing weight to give it a 3.0 kg/hp (6.6lb/hp) power to weight ratio. According to the brand it will be able to run the Nurburgring in less than 7:30.
The 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 will hit the United States in late 2013 with a price tag $130,400, not including a $950 destination charge.
