BMW is expanding its lineup at a rapid pace, so don’t be surprised to see a range-topping SUV model added in the future.

Rumors of a BMW X7 SUV began a decade ago, but the German automaker has been focusing on more compact vehicles such as the X4 and 2 Series Active Tourer, along with its i sub-brand of vehicles. But with all those launching in the near future, along with the confirmation of an X2 model by 2017, it’s now time for BMW to turn its attention to a luxury SUV based on the flagship 7 Series sedan.

According to German publication Handelsblatt, the German automaker is pouring large investments into its Spartansburg, South Carolina plant with the plans of building an X7 SUV based on the next-generation 7 Series platform. The model would be significantly wider and longer than the X5 with three-row seating and likely built to compete with all the high-class SUVs in the marketplace. With the use of aluminum and carbon fiber, it is also likely that BMW could keep the weight of the X7 to near X5 figures.

Another possibility is that research and development on an X7 model would go towards creating a platform for an SUV from Rolls-Royce. With SUV offerings on the horizon from Bentley and Lamborghini, it wouldn’t be a stretch for Rolls-Royce to contend as well.
