The 2018 Hyundai Elantra has earned the highest safety rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Top Safety Pick+ rating applies only to vehicles built after December 2017 and when equipped with optional Automatic Emergency Braking and High Beam Assist. That brings Hyundai to a total of four vehicles with Top Safety Pick+ ratings, with the Elantra joining the Sonata, Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Sport. Five other Hyundai models have earned Top Safety Pick ratings, including the Ioniq Hybrid, Elantra, Elantra GT, Sonata, and Tucson when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.

In order to receive a Top Safety Pick award, vehicles must earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. The headlights must also be rated acceptable or good.

The Top Safety Pick+ rating requires an acceptable or good rating in passenger-side small overlap front tests and improved headlight rating, in addition to the Top Safety Pick requirements.
