MasterTech Warranty Review: 3.0 Stars

MasterTech could be a good option for those who need protection plans for powersport vehicles, because many providers will not cover such vehicles. As for other vehicle owners, MasterTech provides solid choices for coverage but has little to no online presence. The lack of presence could simply indicate that MasterTech hasn’t bothered to set up online profiles, but it also means that there is no guarantee you will find the level of customer service you’re looking for.

Ultimately, we recommend researching a few other extended warranty companies before making a final decision.

MasterTech Warranty Highlights

Overall Rating 3.0
Reputation 2.5
Coverage 3.8
Price 3.0
Transparency 2.6
Customer Service 3.1

MasterTech has been in business for 19 years selling automotive protection plans and guaranteed asset protection (GAP) insurance. MasterTech warranties are only available through dealerships and can only be purchased at the time you buy your vehicle.

The warranty provider sells service plans, but claims are handled through separate administrators and are backed by American Bankers Insurance Company.

MasterTech Extended Auto Warranty Coverage

A MasterTech warranty comes with terms as high as 10 years or 120,000 miles. The five levels of MasterTech warranty coverage are called Ultra Plus, Ultra, Elite, Premier, and Primary. Ultra Plus covers most vehicle repair costs, while Primary provides only basic powertrain coverage.

Details for each MasterTech vehicle protection program are outlined in the chart below:

Primary Premier Elite Ultra Ultra Plus
Engine
Transmission
Drive Axle
Suspension
Steering
Air Conditioning
Fuel
Cooling System
High-Tech Accessories
Additional Unspecified “Non-Excluded Items”
Battery
Brake Pads
Diagnostics
Headlamps
Windshield Wiper Blade

All Mastertech warranty plans are transferable, provided a service fee is paid. Plans also include the following extras:

  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Towing coverage
  • Rental car reimbursement
  • Travel interruption assistance

You can get coverage for powersport vehicles, too. Such vehicles are often not covered by other providers because of the traditionally high service costs.

Complete Protection

In addition to the standard offerings described above, MasterTech also sells four supplementary protection programs called Complete Protection plans. These can be added to any MasterTech warranty and offer things such as key fob repairs, dent protection, and more.

Primary Premier Elite Ultra
Key Replacement
Windshield Repair
Dent Repair
Road Hazard Protection

MasterTech Warranty Cost

The cost of a MasterTech warranty depends on your vehicle as well as the type of coverage and deductible you choose. All MasterTech warranties are sold through dealerships, so the cost may be negotiable. We came across one customer who reported paying about $3,000 for a six-year Ultra plan on a Honda, which is a fairly standard price.

One thing to keep in mind is that your MasterTech plan will be purchased at the time you buy your vehicle and could be rolled into your financing. This means you may end up paying interest on the price of your extended vehicle service contract.

All contracts come with a 60-day money-back guarantee in the case of early cancellation.

Quotes and Claims Processes

Because MasterTech warranties are sold by dealerships, there is no way to get a quote for a MasterTech warranty online.

After you purchase coverage and need a covered repair, you should first take your car to the dealer. The rest of the claims process is standard. You will need to authorize diagnostic charges and teardown service. After the problem has been diagnosed, the dealership will contact your administrator for repair authorization. The repair facility will send the final bill to your MasterTech warranty plan administrator.

MasterTech Reviews and Ratings

MasterTech has virtually no online review presence. It doesn’t have a Better Business Bureau (BBB) or Trustpilot profile. This is strange for a company that has been in business for as long as MasterTech.

BBB and Trustpilot reviews are often made by customers at the request of a company after sales have been made or claims paid out. The lack of reviews may be an indication that MasterTech simply doesn’t bother to solicit customers for reviews. It’s also possible that no customers have felt the need to complain through these traditional channels.

The lack of an online presence does not tell us much one way or the other about MasterTech warranty services. When buying an extended auto warranty, it’s important to know how a company handles claims servicing, and that’s not possible with MasterTech.

Top Recommendations for Extended Car Warranties

There are a number of extended warranty providers out there, and MasterTech certainly isn’t your only option. When we rated the industry’s most popular providers in categories such as coverage, price, and customer service, Endurance and CARCHEX received the highest scores.

Endurance: Best Coverage

Endurance marries a strong industry reputation with extensive coverage options. The company is a direct contract provider and has some of the most transparent and easy-to-understand contracts of any company we’ve reviewed.

With an Endurance car warranty, you can choose from six levels of coverage that range from essential components to complete, exclusionary protection. All Endurance warranties come with a complimentary year free of  Endurance Elite Benefits. This program surpasses other extended warranty benefits by offering services like key fob replacement and free tire repairs or replacements.

It holds an A+ rating from the BBB and many positive customer reviews. Unlike MasterTech, CARCHEX has a strong online reputation.

We think CARCHEX has some of the best customer service in the industry. Plus, the provider has contracts that extend as high as 10 years or 250,000 miles, so it’s a great choice for used vehicles.

Companies receive a score out of 5.0 overall, as well as a rating in each of the following categories:

  • Price: Comparing providers can be difficult due to the many factors that influence cost. To determine this score, we employ a secret shopper analysis using different vehicles, mileages, warranty plans, and locations.
  • Coverage: A wide variety of coverage is essential to support the differing needs of customers. We take into account the number of extended car warranty plans available, term limits, exclusions, and additional benefits.
  • Customer Service: The level of customer service and care provided by an extended warranty company is an important consideration. Our review team sifts through customer reviews and complaints from reputable sources such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot. We also consider the responsiveness of each company’s customer service team based on our secret shopper analysis.
  • Reputation: Good extended warranty providers consistently provide quality experiences. Our team takes into account BBB ratings and the company’s history of reliable service when giving this score.
