Lexus is kicking off its annual Eco Challenge, offering $500,000 in scholarships and grants to middle and high school students.

The Lexus Eco Challenge began in 2007 and since then has distributed $4 million between 25,000 students and their schools by finding creative environmental programs. The annual contest is open to students across the U.S. in grades six through 12. Teams can enter challenges focused on land and water, or air and climate. Winners from the first two challenges then go on to participate in the final challenge with a top prize of $30,000 for both the winning middle and high school teams.

Teams are invited to define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report the results. The first deadline for the land and water challenge is October 7, 2013 while the second deadline for the air and climate challenge is on November 11, 2013.
