Honda’s 2014 Civic came in third place. The Japanese giant made fast changes again for the 2014 model year by offering the vehicle with a continuously-variable transmission in order to ensure its popular compact car remains competitive.

Speaking of transmissions, the nine-speed automatic in the Jeep Cherokee is worth mentioning. It is ment to help the crossover manage up to 31 mpg on the highway with the base 2.4-liter four cylinder engine and without being witthed with an all-wheel drive setup.

But it saving gas is really a priority, the fifth vehicle on this list is tough to beat. Toyota’s city-friendly Prius C offers 50 mpg on average between city and highway driving.
