2016 Toyota Prius, Prius Prime Perform Well in Crash Tests
Safety ratings, and their accompanying videos, from IIHS and NHTSA are giving thumbs up to the 2016 Toyota Prius and the soon-to-be launched Prius Prime plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the car as ‘good’ overall, claiming that it’s the safest Prius ever. ‘Good’ ratings in all categories translated to the 2016 Top Safety Pick Plus award from the IIHS.
The Prius Prime is schedule to roll out later this year. Toyota plans for it to become one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in 2017, with a sales target of 60,000 units sold annually.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also included the Prius Prime in its crash testing safety evaluations. Both the Prius standard hybrid and the Prius Prime share the same platform and overall structure.
For overall safety ratings for the 2016 Prius, NHTSA issued a five-star rating even though not all the tests won that highest-level score. For the frontal crash rating, the Prius received four stars; for side crash, it was five stars; for rollover, the Prius was given a four-star rating; and the overall rating was five stars.
