AAA Picks Top Vehicles For Dogs (and Their Owners)

Some rides are better suited for your dogs than others. From your dog’s point of view, all they need is an open window to stick their head out of, but the American Automobile Association (AAA) has put a bit more thought into compiling their list of the best canine-friendly vehicles.

“More than 45 million households in the U.S. have a dog, and many are taking Fido along for the ride on a regular basis,” said John Nielsen, AAA National Director of Auto Repair and Buying Services. “There several vehicles with features that can help keep pets safe, comfortable and easy to clean-up after while also addressing other driver desires such as sportiness, adventure or luxury.”

In order to put together the most through list, AAA Auto Buying’s team of experts test drove and reviewed hundreds of vehicles. The list was based on a wide variety of factors such as crash test ratings, safety features, fuel economy, ease of animal ingress and egress, cargo area size, availability of tie-down hooks and easy-to-clean interiors.

Broken down into six categories, see the winners after the jump:

Kia Unveils Limited Edition Soul Echo Model for the UK

In a clever black and white themed campaign, Kia UK is now offering a new special edition version of the Soul, as well as a special edition version of both the Picanto and Rio small cars. We can’t help but to relate it to Scion’s RS-series releases, where unique paint colors and accessories adorn the vehicle giving it a customized and unique taste from the run-of-the-mill units that leave the lot. And like the numerous Scion versions, this Soul is the latest of four special edition models which include the Burner, Shaker and Samba.

Called the Soul Echo, it will be offered in Clear White or Quartz Black metallic with contrasting features. The white Soul Echo gets black 18-inch wheels and black gloss mirrors with a black stripe kit, while the black Soul Echo gets white detailing. Interior upgrades include black leather and an upgraded audio system with iPod connectivity, along with parking sensors and air conditioning. It retails for around $21,000, but only in the UK.

The Picanto and Rio have a Domino-theme going on with similar white and black exterior colors to choose from with contrasting accents to give it that Domino effect. The Picanto Domino is offered at $12,000 and the Rio Domino is a little shy of $14,000.

We must say that Kia around the world has been doing a fantastic job in marketing their new trendy and affordable platforms to the masses. These customized versions may be taking a page out of Scion’s book, but even the harshest of critics have to admit that the Soul is a great xB contender.

Consumers Reports Released List Of 10 Best Cars For Teen Drivers

Just like the title says, the venerable magazine Consumers Reports has released its list of cars suitable for teen drivers, and absolutely none of them will make the budding enthusiast glow with delight.

Of course, Consumers Reports is primarly concerned with safety when it comes to cars for first time drivers, so their choices are swayed by features like Electronic Stability Control, curtain airbags and the like.  The choices are split between pedestrian fare like the Toyota Camry and Saturn Aura, and older luxury cars like the Acura RL or the BMW 3 and 5 Series. As the magazine astutely points out, older luxury cars will be a little nicer and come with a wide array of safety gear, but repairs will certainly be costly.

Kia Looking to Scrap Model Names for Alphanumeric Badges

Kia is looking to add a little extra panache to its image by dropping the current list of model names in favor of alphanumeric designations. According Chung Eui-sun, to Vice Chairman to Hyundai Motor Co., which owns Kia, the Korean automaker is looking to make the switch in North America. Currently, Kia uses short alphanumeric badges for many of its models in its home-market of South Korean and in other markets throughout the world. For instance, the new Optima sedan, unveiled at the New York Auto Show, is badged as the K5 in Korea. This switch might also result in the Forte changing its name to the K3.

New Volkswagen Touran 7-Seater Gets 51.3 MPG

Volkswagen‘s compact Touran Minivan (not to be confused with the Routan sold here in North America) has just been launched in its newest incarnation, and the range is being led by a 1.6L BlueMotion diesel that makes 105 horsepower returns a very impressive 51.3 miles per gallon. Also interesting is the tiny 1.2L 4-cylinder gas engine that puts out a respectable 102 horsepower thanks to Volkswagen’s direct injection system, and a small supercharger attached to the engine.

The Touran is based on the Golf, making it a bit small for North American tastes, but perfect for Europe and Asia, where high fuel prices and tight spaces mean that a car like a Dodge Caravan is totally unsuitable, and a smaller footprint is required (Honda even sells a completely different Odyssey in other markets for this reason). If the Ford Focus C-Max is a hit in North America, the Touran might make it over to our shores, but with Chevrolet recently killing the Orlando for the United States (but not Canada), don’t count on it.

Kia Soul Hamsters Return With Hip-Hop Themed Spot

Regular readers will recall a fondness for hip-hop music at the Autoguide offices.  We’ve previously covered the Houston “swangas” phenomenon, Seattle’s Volvo driving rapper and Atlanta’s dubbed-out Camaros. Now, Kia is showing the East Coast some love, with their new commercial featuring their familiar Hamsters, the Kia Soul, and Black Sheep’s seminal anthem The Choice Is Yours.

The video is shot with a gritty, New York-esque background, and if it weren’t for the cute and furry hamsters, it could actually be a pretty decent music video, with requisite scenes on the basketball court, cruising with the homeys, getting a line-up at the barbershop, and ritzy Park Avenue types staring with disapproving glances at the young hoodlum hamsters. Along the way, the Hamsters reference the song’s hook, by presenting various “boring” econo-car options (represented by a toaster, washing machine and cardboard box), or the neon green Kia Soul. Ostensibly, these options represent offerings from Toyota and Honda, but whoever dreamed up the ad forgot about the hamster’s true vehicle of choice, the Zhu Zhu pet car (which looks strangely like a British sports car).

Kia Optima Coupe Renderings Look as Good as We Expected

Several weeks ago we brought you a story about the possibility of a Kia Optima Coupe. Now, thanks to the folks at InsideLine, we have a few renderings of what that car might look like. And as we expected, it’s a stunner.

Having just launched the Optima Sedan at the New York Auto Show, a coupe model isn’t that unlikely. After all, both Honda and Nissan offer coupe versions of their mid-size sedans. And despite being front-wheel drive, we’d still really like to get our hands on an Optima Coupe with the company’s new 274-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Rumors of the coupe originate from Kia designer Peter Schreyer, who confirmed a wagon model was coming (but possibly only for Europe). “I would love to do station wagon and coupé versions of the car. The station wagon would only really work for Europe but the coupé would work in the U.S.,” he said.

Only time will tell if Kia decides to move ahead with this project. In the mean time, check out a few more renderings after the jump:

2011 Kia Sorento SX Adds Sporty Trim to New Crossover

Kia recently unveiled the sporty SX trim level version of the 2011 Sorento crossover at the Atlanta Auto Show. Unfortunately Kia hasn’t released any photos yet and we don’t have our own because we weren’t at the Atlanta show. In fact, we’re pretty sure no one from anywhere but Atlanta was at the show. So why would Kia unveil the car there, you ask? It’s simple, the Sorento is Kias first vehicle to be built in the United States at the Korean automaker’s West Point, Georgia facility,  Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG).

The SX trim level will be offered exclusively with the 276-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed transmission. Upgrades include a new front and rear bumpers, LED taillights, a chrome exhaust tip, chrome roof rails, stainless steel skid plates and 18-inch wheels. Added sport upgrades include a suspension that has been lowered by half an inch and Dual Flow Damper shock absorbers that are designed to improve handling while retaining ride comfort.

Inside there are stainless steel pedals and a metallic gauge surround, not to mention added standard equipment like heated leather front seats, an auto-dimming mirror, navigation with a back up camera and a 10-speaker Infinity Audio surround-sound system.

Kia should release pricing when the car goes on show next week at the New York Auto Show. We’ll be sure to bring you plenty of photos as well, with live NY Auto Show coverage starting March 31st.
