The Toyota Grand Highlander is an enlarged version of one of the staples in the three row family SUV class. It address one of the major weaknesses of the regular Highlander model by adding a more usable third row of seats. As well, there’s increased cargo capacity.

Like the regular Highlander, the Grand Highlander comes with a choice of turbocharged or hybrid four-cylinders. Unlike the smaller model, the Grand Highlander also has an optional turbocharged and hybrid four cylinder.

It’s the battle of the big SUVs here—two of the biggest, in fact.

It’s true: outside of the body-on-frame behemoths, not much is larger than the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas. For those who need to haul six or seven people in relative comfort—and are deathly allergic to minivans—these are two of the best. The Toyota is all-new this year, addressing the most common criticism of the non-Grand Highlander: a tight way-back. Meanwhile the Atlas saw a substantial refresh, upping quality while trimming the powertrain options.

We recently spent a week comparing the Grand Highlander to the refreshed 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. As we weighed each vehicle’s pros and cons, three features of Toyota’s latest SUV really stood out.
