2011 Mercedes R350 Review
The R-Class is old. Even with the facelift, 2011 marks its seventh year of production with only a few detail changes since its ‘05 intro. It’s a stark reminder of how far Mercedes-Benz had fallen from its king-maker days, and how far out of the hole the company’s pulled itself recently.

Volvo P1800 Turns 50 This Year, Still A Looker
While Volvo has produced some attractive cars in its lifetime, perhaps the most loved and admired is the P1800. While first prototypes of this car hit the roads in 1960, eager buyers had to wait another year to get their hands on this beautiful 2+2 coupe. Interesting point to note, while the prototypes were built by the Italian coachbuilder Frua, initial production vehicles were built by Jensen Motors in U.K.

Geneva 2011: Volkswagen Bulli Is A 21st Century Microbus
In Germany, the Volkswagen Microbus was affectionately known as the “Bulli”, proving that terms of endearment and the German language aren’t always compatible. While Volkswagen had a false start with their Microbus concept in 2001, the same idea is back 10 years later, and it manages to be even more contemporary while still providing Baby Boomers with a hefty shot of nostalgia.
Geneva 2011: Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid Heralds The Return Of An Icon
While Volvo was apparently set to discontinue North American sales of all station wagons – arguably the vehicle they built their reputation on – in favor of crossovers. But that looks like it will change starting in 2012, with the launch of their V60 plug-in hybrid.

Volvo V60 Plug-in Diesel Hybrid Wagon: Geneva Auto Show Preview
Volvo has unveiled a plug-in diesel hybrid version of its V60 wagon ahead of the Geneva Auto Show, which promises to do for fuel spending what Atkins did for bread consumption.
The diesel hybrid takes Volvo’s 2.4-liter inline-five turbodiesel, pumping out 215 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque and adds an electric motor to the back wheels: a 70-horsepower motor powered by a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, controlling what Volvo calls the Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD).
With two engines and AWD, the V60 hybrid can run on “Pure” mode for 32 miles on just the electric motor. With “Hybrid” mode activated, it’s good for a range of 746 miles, and in full-attack “Power” mode the V60’s two engines hustle to 60mph in 6.9 seconds. That’s what 472 lb-ft of torque combined will do for a family hauler.
The V60 hybrid will debut in Geneva in a few weeks. Click the jump for video of the diesel-hybrid.

Lincoln MKT Town Car Set To Take Up The Livery Car Mantle From The Panther Platform
The Lincoln Town Car is legendary for its ubiquity as a “black car”, a private limo for the well-to-do in New York City and other swanky locales. But with the Panther Platform vehicles (like the Town Car, Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis) set to be killed off very shortly, Lincoln has been scrambling for an alternative.
The new MKT Town Car is a very different machine than the Town Car its replacing. The big sedan was a rear-drive, body-on-frame vehicle that was beloved for its robust nature, cheap repair costs and the ability to go for untold miles without needing anything more than routine maintenance. On the other hand, the MKT is based on a front-drive chassis (though all-wheel-drive is available) and uses a modern V6 engine.
Operators will likely be skeptical that the MKT can handle the rigors of endless commuter duty through the pot-hole ridden pavement of Manhattan, so Lincoln has beefed up the chassis, brakes and other components to handle this task – and to provide a re-enforcements should clients wish to stretch the MKT by 10 feet, a capability built in to the Town Car from the factory. Wi-fi capability, a SYNC system and special rear seat pockets are maps and newspapers are further concessions made for the livery car market.
The rear seats have been moved back by 1.5 inches to allow for more leg room with reclining rear seats and controls for the front passenger chair, should back seat riders desire more leg room. With 39.6 cubic feet of cargo space, the MKT also boasts more room for material objects than the Town Car, even if the old-money cachet of the outgoing vehicle isn’t quite the same.

Chicago 2011: Toyota Matrix Revealed
The Toyota Matrix has always been a bit of a non-starter in the marketplace, but that’s not stopping Toyota from launching an all new updated version at the Chicago Auto Show.
Just like the updated 2011 Corolla, the changes are essentially all cosmetic. The same 1.8L and 2.4L powerplants remain in place, as does the antiquated 4-speed automatic transmission. The Matrix, unlike its sedan counterpart, does get all-wheel-drive as an option.

MINI Countryman May Get WRC Inspired Street Car
With a huge gulf existing between the road-going version of the MINI Countryman and the WRC-ready version, a halo version that could bridge the gap between urban crossover and full-blown race car could be an asset for MINI, and help them leverage some of the image boost that their rally program will provide, especially in parts of the world where WRC is a popular motorsport.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 Wagon Review
Days where you’d get a half-dozen kids, along with mom, dad and grandma, into a huge American station wagon are long gone. Replaced first by the ‘80s minivan, the ‘90s SUV and the ‘00s crossovers, big wagons fell out of favor and haven’t recovered. And not because they’ve lost any utility in the meantime. No, a station wagon is one of the most efficient forms of transport, with 80 percent of a minivan’s capability without the stigma. Or less of a stigma, anyway.

The CLS Shooting Brake is ostensinly positioned against the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, and it should have little trouble finding homes amongst the garages of wealthy buyers in a couple years time. For the extremely wealthy and eccentric, a CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake is supposedly in the works – expect these to be brought over in single digit numbers, much like the R63 AMG.

Volkswagen Donates Four Jetta SportWagen TDI Models to Law Enforcement Agencies
Toss some cop car badging and a lightbar on pretty much anything and its instantly cool. Case in point, this Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. OK, so we have a soft spot for Euro-wagons, but apart from that a Jetta wagon, and a diesel no less, isn’t going to win any popularity contests.

Volvo S60, V60 R-Design To Debut In Paris
Volvo unceremoniously killed off their S60R and V70R some years ago, but they still kept their R-design appearance packages around, for those who wanted a more aggressive looking Volvo.

A strut tower brace, firmer springs and bushings make up most of the upgrades, but the real treat is a torque-vectoring traction control system that will appear on S60 AWD models. The new package will debut at the Paris Auto Show next week.
