2021 Buick Cars
Buick has had quite an image shake-up over the last decade. With vehicles like the Enclave, Regal, and Lacrosse, Buick slowly shed its pipes-and-slippers image. The compact Verano joined the lineup in the 2010s, including a powerful 250 hp turbocharged version, and the pint-sized Encore crossover showed up soon after.
Things changed just days before 2020, when General Motors announced the Buick Regal would disappear at the end of the model year. It marked the end of a nameplate a half-century old, and means Buick is now exclusively crossovers and SUVs, at least in North America.
As the oldest American car brand, dating back to 1903 the company was bought by William C. Durant in 1904 and went on to considerable success eventually becoming the largest automaker in America. Having built icons of the American auto industry like the Riviera and Park Avenue, Buick sales peaked in 1984, two years after the introduction of what is easily the brand’s best known car, the Grand National.
The brand's entry-level model, this more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Trax will get you into the Buick brand for just over $24,000, although AWD models retail for over $27,000. Just one engine is available, a turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers passable performance with 138 hp and a touch more torque. While it's a bit dated, we like the car's interior design, as well as ride quality and maneuverability (a rare combo). We don't like the sightlines, the cargo space isn't great (it is tiny) and it starts quite affordably but gets expensive fast.
Like the Isley Brothers didn't actually say: a little bit longer, now! New for 2020, the Encore GX is an embiggened Encore. It really is only a little bit longer, coming in at 175 inches nose-to-tail versus baby brother's 168. That affords it with more room in pretty much all categories, save a tiny reduction in second-row head space.
The Encore GX rides on the same platform as Chevrolet's new Trailblazer. That translates to a pair of turbocharged triple-cylinder options, in 1.2-liter and 1.3-liter sizes. Sticking to front-drive means a CVT; opt for all-wheel drive and in comes a nine-speed automatic.
Prices start at a hair over $26,000, stretching to $32,000 or so for a loaded all-wheel drive model. The GX includes numerous standard safety features, including emergency braking and lane departure warning.
The Envision fights in the hyper-competitive compact crossover market. This Chinese-built SUV shares a platform with both the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. Like its littler siblings, the Envision has two engine options and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The basic engine is a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-pot, while a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo is optional. The Envision starts at $34,385, rising to the mid-40s for more luxurious all-wheel drive options. We like the Envision's comfy ride and ample turbo power, but its nine-speed auto hunts for gears, and the interior quality isn't quite in line with the brand image.
Thanks to some savvy advertising back when the first-gen model launched, the Enclave is now the de facto face of the modern Buick brand. The big seven-seater is a softer ride than its sibling the Chevy Traverse, with a more luxurious, whisper-quiet interior to boot. The Enclave starts at $41,195, but it's the pricier models that get all the best in modern tech. Load up every single bell and whistle in the Avenir trim and you can clear $60k.
